Sully Wong made their first release this past August with one model called The Cassette Sneaker. The brand was forged between two sneaker aficionados, George Sully and Henri Wong who sought to offer a true collectible to sneakerheads from east to west. The Chuck Taylor high top silhouette features cracked white leather, is laced with cassette fragments and details hip-hop pioneer history on the inner-tongue.
“If we were to do a SW Cassette Version II, we would most definitely feature Rakim on the tongue! Actually that was our first choice but then decided to showcase a more complete history.”
Format: Please state who you are and your role at Sully Wong.
George Sully: My name is George Sully; I’m a co-creator of Sully Wong. My role is simple – design! design! design! My co-conspirator Henry Wong shares equally in the design process as well as HK [Hong Kong] liaison, be it that he is from there.
Format: Hip-Hop History was clearly the inspiration behind the Cassette Sneaker. How has hip-hop influenced your life on a personal level?
George Sully: Hip-Hop is my true foundation. I was fortunate enough to have grown up in that magic window of time in hip-hop history were some of the most influential music was made! I was also lucky enough to have had a brother six years older than I, so by default, I was able to absorb a double dose of hip-hop culture at a very young age.
Format: The SW exclusive was just released in August ‘08 worldwide. What has been the public response to the Cassette Sneaker?
George Sully: The response couldn’t have been any better! It’s a tribute sneaker, which gave most the opportunity to reminisce, and others an opportunity to brush up on their who, what, when, where and why.
Format: Have there been limitations offering only one product option to customers?
George Sully: For our first official sneaker under the SW brand, we wanted something that would make for a true collectable. I think that we have accomplished that. Moving forward we are in full production of some really collectable worthy sneakers. Stay tuned.
Format: If you were to do a Cassette Sneaker Version II, which artists would be featured on the inside tongue?
George Sully: If we were to do a SW Cassette Version II, we would most definitely feature Rakim on the tongue! Actually that was our first choice but then decided to showcase a more complete history.
Format: Please tell us about your up-coming original designs and what we can expect from Sully Wong in the future.
George Sully: We have already completed our next Limited Release. However, we will be traveling to Hong Kong for a few weeks to source new swatches and sneaker innovations that we can adopt to our brand.
