This week in London, the two-hundred year old auction house Bonhams will be auctioning off 67 works by top urban artists including Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Blek Le Rat, and Futura. The sale includes Shepard Fairey’s iconic painting Change (2008), the famous portrait of Barack Obama rendered in red, white, and blue seen below. The sale also includes an olive wood sculpture titled Watchtower (2007) by urban art phenomenon Banksy as well as number of prints and paintings by the artist. In addition to the Banksy sculpture, two other 3-D pieces round out the selection on offer including Tablet (2009) by stone carver Jon Whitbread and graffiti artist Sez.
Bonhams Urban Art Auction is not the first of its kind but certainly shows the increasing presence and command of urban artists within the upper echelons of the art world. High prices are anticipated for many of the pieces which are also expected to draw high profile buyers and media attention. The gavel drops January 11th at Bonhams, London.
