Immortalized by Steve McQueen in his classic 1971 film ‘Le Mans’, 24 Hours of Le Mans is the worlds oldest sports car race, and all eyes were on Car 79, the BMW M3 Art Car by Jeff Koons. Renowned contemporary artist Jeff Koons lent his talent to the iconic brand for the event, in a tradition dating back to 1975 when artist Alexander Calder was asked to turn a BMW 3.0 CSL into a work of art for the race. Jeff Koons’ dynamic and energetic design joins the company of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and David Hockney as the latest artist to race the iconic tracks of Le Mans.
Sadly, Jeff Koons’ BMW M3 Art Car was forced an early retirement during the race, after running out of fuel following several unscheduled pit stops during the early portion of the race. This video is an exciting look at the process of collaboration between Jeff Koons and the folks at BMW to create their latest Art Car.
