Ideas come and go, but to have the bravado to create a brand that is associated with possibly the best player in NBA history is truly something special. Mike, a fashion brand created by 36 year old, Founder and CEO, Scott Nelson is in the midst of something big. Just like MJ himself who took seven years to get to the NBA Finals, Scott Nelson is determined to represent Money in a way that has not been done before.
Just like the creativity that His Airness displayed driving through the lane in the 91 NBA Finals against Magic Johnson and the Lakers, Nelson hopes to break into today’s saturated fashion industry. To stop all confusion Scott Nelson is here to let you know, “Mike is the brand and Mike23 is the website.â€
Format: Did you play college ball and or in the NBA?
SN: No. Probably should have though. Skateboarding and having a Vert ramp put organized sports on hold. I excelled in baseball, basketball and football but I did not vibe with the school spirit and jock hood of it at the time. Jocks in the late 80’s could not understand skateboarding and that I was a skateboarder as well.
Format: What are you involved in outside of Mike23?
SN: I am playing in a league at the moment. It’s decent. Bobitto is on the team along with other guys I know from downtown. Outside of MIKE, I skateboard heavy, bowl, play pool, Vert ramps any transition really. 28 years and killing it.
Someone at the game stole his game jersey before tip off and he came out sporting the #12 with no name on the back and dropped 49 pts. I assume he was pissed.
Format: Where were you when you first witnessed Michael Jordan play ball, and what do you remember when watching him?
SN: Orlando Magic game in the 90-91 season. Someone at the game stole his game jersey before tip off and he came out sporting the #12 with no name on the back and dropped 49 pts. I assume he was pissed.
Format: What appealed to you about his game and him as an individual?
SN: Superior Athlete with hard work and skills.
Format: What excited you about the Jordan Brand?
SN: That Nike built a collection around him.
Format: Tell me the quick version of how Mike23 was created: when, purpose it was created, what you want it to represent, where you see it going, and what sets it apart from other Jordan products?
SN: MIKE came about when I actually had an interview for a designer for the Jordan brand. I have been a Nike fan for 20 years plus and I realized that MJ helped make Nike what it is today. I was just bringing that awareness to the masses. I pay tribute and homage to MJ, no disrespect, just love. I felt that I could definitely build it and I was right. The love I have got from the masses is unbelievable. I’m building an elite brand here. By hand picking my accounts, I keep the integrity of the brand solid. It’s amazing when you hear people tell you that you’re helping their brands. By fine tuning and precise decision making, along with timing, it has allowed me to keep that edge.
Format: Mike23 seems like the hip-hop classic version of MJ. Was that the direction you wanted to go in, what part of Michael’s image were you trying to identify with?
SN: Hip-Hop classic? In a way, precisely. I just felt like I had a lot to offer, and what they had been doing for years was suspect. No offense but that is reality.
Format: Can you speak on any upcoming products that are being released or have recently released?
SN: A custom MIKE crackle sofa, made entirely of Canadian dark walnut, with built in footwear display cases on both ends of the sofa. I did some research on modern furniture and found a George Nelson sofa from 1958 with built in end tables. I was in love with it, so I flipped it. Come on, how ill would it be to have this piece for the true hardcore sneaker lover. The response has been amazing.
Format: Has it been hard breaking in the market because it is already saturated with a multitude of Jordan products, and do you think that it’s
a problem if you feel it is oversaturated?
SN: Not at all, I can not speak for anyone else at all, it works because it is MIKE and I pay tribute and homage to MJ. Therefore, it makes sense and people get it.
Format: How do we as consumers separate the real from the fake Mike23 brand or where should we purchase you’re product?
SN: Purchase from one of the many retailers listed on www.mike23.com or directly from the website.
Format: Are you a Chicago Bulls fan? If not who is your squad and why?
SN: Yeah, but not a fanatic. They got Scott Skiles for a coach and I got to watch him play in Orlando, growing up. Guy was tough as nails. Ben Gordon is nasty, Hinrich is very consistent and I’m sure mad people doubted him. Big Ben is clogging up the lane. Noccioni has skills. They have some playoff capabilities and will no doubt give some people problems this year.
I have been a Nike fan for 20 years plus and I realized that MJ helped make Nike what it is today. I was just bringing that awareness to the masses.
Format: What do you think about David Stern and his new rules in the NBA?
SN: It’s his league to do what he pleases. Dude has been running things for quite some time.
Format: What is you’re ultimate goal for Mike23?
SN: To position myself were I can present it to Money and let him put his face to something that he can turn into a very lucrative business deal or there can be an alliance of sorts.
Format: There is a Mike23 Chuck out now. Will we ever see a Mike23 sneaker?
SN: Footwear is my love and I have been fortunate to grow up very near to a Nike outlet in the 80’s. I still visit it from time to time when I go back home, so yes, things are in the works.
