STD Issue 47

std47_cover1.jpgIs Ludacris the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of hip-hop? In the recently released song, titled “Politics as Usual,” the Atlanta rhymester calls Hillary Clinton a “b*tch,” says the Republican nominee, John McCain, should be paralyzed in a wheelchair, and President Bush is “mentally handicap.” Two out of three ain’t bad (even for us, the McCain remark is just wrong). You decide—soothsayer or straight hater? Either way, musicians are becoming too involved in politics. They should stick to what they do best: sappy love songs, hipster dance moves, misogynistic rhymes and mindless rock & roll. Anybody want to take a guess at who Ludacris is voting for?

STD Issue 46

std46_cover.jpg Before you is STD’s first-ever INTERNATIONAL Issue. We know, it’s dope and all that jazz. We pride ourselves on bringing you the best coverage around. STD is like CNN, but for music—“The most trusted name in music.” Mad official, right? The crew hit up Germany, Canada, Iceland, Mexico and even Estonia without leaving our apartments. And it is true what they say: music really is universal—it can suck from anywhere. In the end, Chicago rhymester Common was right: “I went from bashful, to asshole, to international.” Now if we could only find our passports.

STD Issue 45

It’s the end of an era. No, not for the STD crew (or your favorite review section, we love you guys too much to call it quits). The once famed, and feared, Death Row Records was recently sold for $24…

STD Issue 44

std44_cover.jpgApparently former celebrated late-night host Arsenio Hall is making his “triumphant” (really?) return to television. Remember, the guy with the hip-top fade best known for doing fist-pumping “whoop, whoop, whoop” chants all the time (yeah, we secretly miss doing them too). His new show, “Funniest Moments,” debuts this fall and is said to be similar to “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” Whatever happened to originality? Rhetorical question.

We actually know what happened to it: Soulja Boy and Nelly stomped and “yoooouuuued” that shit out. C’mon, are you really surprised? Nevertheless, we’ll be bumping The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s “Summertime” (an STD favorite) and getting low with Flo Rida all summer long in hopes of forgetting about Arsenio’s return to primetime. Yeah, we’re not that excited either.

STD Issue 43

std43-cover.jpg With gas prices on the rise, the ongoing war in Iraq, and unemployment rates hitting an all-time high, good music is all we seem to have left (no more street dreamin’, sorry Fab). The STD crew decided to take it easy this week (shhhh, don’t tell our editor) as we find ourselves actually giving mad props to some decent albums (yeah, we were surprised too). We must be losing our touch. Hey, even Darth Vader took a day or two off. So as we bottle up the HATE this week (Side note: “Hi Hater” by Maino is quickly becoming a STD favorite at the office), rest assured that the web’s most notorious wrecking crew (oh, you didn’t know) will be back on our regular steez soon. Like Maino said: “It’s cool, they even hated on Jesus.” Quality music in 2008. Go figure.

STD Issue 42

Imagine if the music industry played out like the NBA draft lottery – proverbial powerhouse record labels vying for the next great music artist. If we were only so lucky. Still, if you think about it, having the former “president” (we’re still trying to figure out exactly what the Brooklyn emcee’s job duties were, any takers?) of Def Jam – Jay-Z – in attendance representing his squad, the New Jersey Nets, is probably as close as we’ll ever get.

The water cooler has made for some interesting debates over the last week on who would be our No. 1 pick, and, after hours of competitive banter (yes, we keep score), the STD crew finally came to a decision. He’s our Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley and Kevin Love rolled into one – rapper Jay Electronica (Blu, was a close second). Dude is about to dominate the game and his cross-genre appeal doesn’t hurt either. Either way, we’ll be attending the real NBA draft on June 26 at Madison Square Garden. The boos in section 8 will be coming from us. Word to Big Bird.

STD Issue 41

The STD crew has been out of the office for a while. We’ve been pushing the political pavement for a few months and gathered some interesting data.

1. Barack Obama tivo’s Flavor of Love.
2. CNN host Anderson Cooper previously tried out for Project Runway and never made the show. We hear he makes a “fierce” sundress, though.
3. John McCain is actually 108 years old.
4. Don’t let Hilary fool you; she’s been sippin’ syrup (grape flavor) since she met Bill years ago. Sources say Lil Wayne is her dealer.
5. Democratic strategist Donna Brazile uses “Dr. Miracle” to get her perm just right.

So, after countless beer tours with the Clintons, sticking “Baby On Board” bumper stickers on Ron Paul’s tour bus and trying to get Rev. Jeremiah Wright a talk show on BET, we decided to call it quits and give this reviewing thing a shot, again. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. Well, that is, unless you never pay your taxes. Free Wesley Snipes!

STD Issue 29

zzstd29_cover.jpg The STD crew is busy telling dirty jokes to each other:

Wife: I dreamed they were auctioning dicks. The big ones went for $10 and the thick ones went for $20.

Husband: How about the ones like mine?

Wife: They gave those away.

Husband: I had a dream, too. I dreamed they were auctioning off cunts. The pretty ones went for a $1000 and the tight ones went for $2000.

Wife: And how much for the ones like mine?

Husband: That’s where they held the auction!

STD Issue 27

zzstd27_cover.jpg Disabled and differently abled – no really, if they were so “abled” they would realize “abled” is not a word – people are the coolest people to date, because they get into cool places and avoid line ups. Date a disabled or differently abled person as soon as possible. STD crew is a little late – not as late as usual – because it has been taking homely looking bitches with crutches to movies and retarded dudes to Wal-Mart so it can avoid line ups while scoring that easy lay.

STD Issue 25

zzstd25_cover.jpg The STD crew has been on vacation for a while. Well, no one went on vacation, actually. In fact, no one made it 30 blocks past their front door (except Kemp Illups, he needed to hit some fixed-gear bicyclists with his pickup truck) because everyone in the STD crew is too fucked up to comprehend Velcro, let alone a transit map. But six weeks later, the STD crew is back to explain why Parisians are whore-mongers and why Kanye West fans are gaylords.
